From November 2020 Newsletter - Subscribe The K-12 academy is expected to open in November for the 2020/2021 school year. There are 63 teachers, 8 administrators and additional support staff in classrooms. Enrollment has started and ELWA Academy estimates that 750 kids will enroll. This is down about 200 kids from last year. Parents just don't have the extra funds to send their kids to school this year. Providing a one year full scholarship costs between $350 (K-8) and $600 (9-12). ELWA Academy provides the highest level of K-12 learning in the country! ELWA Ministries Association USA hopes to provide 60 full scholarships with your help. Donate to ELWA Academy
EMAUSA’s recent financial gift to ELWA Hospital will, according to Jason Troxell, CEO – ELWA Medical Center, “go a long way to proving supplies and care for patients suffering from COVID-19 in Liberia.” EMAUSA looks forward to partnering with ELWA Hospital to promote evangelism and discipleship of both patients and staff. Currently, there are three Chaplains at ELWA Hospital: three paid, one volunteer. They conduct daily chapel teaching and worship services. They pray with patients individually offering counseling when needed. The Chaplains also pray over, counsel, and disciple staff members. The Jesus Film is shown daily along with a Gospel presentation on the 10 monitors in the OPD area. Many patients have made the decision to follow Jesus as the result of this film.
Visitors who gather at the hospital before opening are invited to participate in Bible teaching provided by HCF (Healthcare Christian Fellowship), a ministry started by ELWA Hospital staff. HCF members also visit patients providing Bible teaching to them and their families. Mr. Troxell would like to provide more encouragement and spiritual training for ELWA Hospital staff including one-on-one discipleship and small group Bible studies. “I think its easy to underestimate the darkness in Liberia. There are a lot of “churches” but still the country is very dark spiritually…” says Mr. Troxell. Work was paused on the construction of the new ICM building in April due to COVID-19 and its restrictions. In addition to health risk, because the government imposed a 3:00 PM curfew, workers had to start making their way back home by 1 PM which meant the work day was cut short. Meanu Kayea was born in Liberia and is on the advisory board of EMAUSA. His father, now with the Lord, ministered to the Liberian people through broadcasts on ELWA Christian radio and with Youth for Christ. Meanu was 19 years old when he moved to the US where he lived with an ELWA missionary family. Meanu says, "I believe God is calling me to return to Liberia to disciple, mentor and share God’s love and the message of salvation with Liberian youth. The desire and burden to return to my birthplace began about 10 years ago when God gave me the opportunity to connect with a group of young Liberian boys adopted by American families in Charlotte, North Carolina where I live. My relationship with the boys began by meeting regularly with them in small discipleship groups. Through this experience, I felt the Lord placing the youth of Liberia upon my heart and a plan for a discipleship program that would bring Jesus to them began to form." |
