ELWAKids

Who are the ELWAKids?

They spent childhood years living at ELWA where their parents served Liberia as radio broadcasters, doctors, mechanics, accountants, teachers, pastors, nurses, and engineers.  ELWA, in those days, was a vibrant community of missionary families from all over the world.  These individual families became a larger family.  ELWAKids felt like cousins and called their friend's parents “Aunt” and “Uncle”.  For many ELWAKids, it was the only home they knew for most of their childhoods.

As time went by, families came and went. Some left ELWA returning to their home countries. Others came to take their places in the various ministry areas.  In the 1990’s Liberia’s civil war required all ELWA families to leave ELWA.

In 2000, an ELWA reunion was held in Chicago.  ELWAKids, now grown, married, with their own children, reconnected.   An email group was created and conversations started.  They talked about memories both happy and painful.  They shared stories and struggles and the unique challenges and blessings of being an MK (missionary kid).  Two years later, another reunion was held, this time in Dallas.  ELWAKids laughed, cried, sang, and prayed together. Reunions have continued and some ELWAKids have traveled back to ELWA.  Precious aunts and uncles passed away and ELWAKids gathered at memorial services.

In 2016 ELWAKids grieved the loss of one of their own, Dan Snyder, who suddenly went to be with the Lord.  Danny had traveled back to ELWA several times, dedicated to ELWA’s post-war recovery.  EMAUSA, at that time, was working on renovating a guesthouse.  ELWAKids raised a significant amount of money in Danny’s memory enabling EMAUSA to complete the project.  A group of ELWAKids traveled to ELWA in 2017 to dedicate the completed guesthouse.

ELWAKids love ELWA and welcome opportunities to partner with EMAUSA.
