ELWA Radio
ELWA Radio was established in 1954 as the first missionary radio station in all of Africa and one of only two radio stations in Liberia at that time. At the height of the ministry in the late 1980's, ELWA was broadcasting on 5 transmitters in 47 different languages, covering a large part of Africa. Due to the long running civil war in Liberia, the radio station was destroyed in both 1990 and again in 1996. Currently, ELWA radio is broadcasting in English on 94.5 FM, and one shortwave transmitter, covering Liberia in most of the local languages. The broadcast schedule includes preaching and teaching, music, healthcare and development, and programming for children. An upgraded and larger facility has been built. The interior needs to be completed.. ELWA Radio has a paid Liberian staff of 21 people.
EMA-USA helps to sponsor programs on ELWA radio. Currently, we are paying for two local Liberian programs and two that originate in the USA. We hope to be able to raise funds to support more good programs. The cost for a 30-minute program is $25. Airing weekly, the cost comes to $100 per month, $1,200 for the year.
EMAUSA has pledged to keep this radio station on the air and has supported many projects and broadcasts to help sustain the station.

ELWA Hospital is a 110-bed, 49,000 square foot facility staffed by: eight full time doctors, three part time doctors, 14 residents, three additional part-time doctors who mainly teach/supervise residents, and approximately 85 nurses
Short-term volunteers come for three-month stints or longer to support permanent staff.
Approximately 1000 patients are seen weekly. Most of these are out-patients. About 60 are seen in the Emergency Room.P
Over 100 babies are delivered each month. The rate of C-sections is high because so many people get referred or come to the hospital because they know they might need surgical delivery.
