Update on Current Fundraising Projects

11/12/2020

From November 2020 Newsletter - Subscribe

The mission for ELWA in Liberia for more than 65 years has been centered around the belief  that no one should live and die without hearing God's good news. To this end, we invited you to join us in three ministry projects (pictures above) to share the Gospel and disciple believers in Liberia. Fundraising is off to a good start. See how we are doing below.

We still need lots of financial help on these three projects! Please consider a year-end donation.

Jestina Wesseh (A personal story)

We wrote to you about Jestina in our spring newsletter and now we'd like to give you an  update. Jestina attended ELWA Academy for 11th and 12th grades and is now in nursing school. She is studying general nursing but getting training in psychology and specializing in pediatrics.   She is now in her junior year of nursing school with plans to graduate in the 2021-2022 school year.

There is more to Jestina's story.   As a member of the Kru tribe, Jestina was paying for her school fees through the buying and selling of fish.   The Kru people have always lived along the Liberian coast and have made their living from the sea. The men go out in their small fishing boats all night in the Atlantic Ocean for a catch of fish. In the morning they come back to shore with their catch and the women take the fish to market. This is how Jestina was paying for her school fees for nursing school.

Jestina lost four of her brothers and sisters in a fire in their home one year ago.  She has persisted in her nursing training despite all these tragic circumstances and COVID-19 lockdowns. Jestina is now continuing her training at a nearby hospital in the "Red Light" district outside of Monrovia.  EMAUSA board members have helped Jestina with school fees as well as transportation to this hospital in Red Light during this difficult time.

There are many stories of courageous and faithful young people in Liberia like Jestina.  Please help Jestina and others that depend upon ELWA Ministries to get their training for key skills to serve our Lord and to support their own families.   You can do so by donating to our ELWA Ministries Scholarship Program.

ELWA Academy Covid Update

10/28/2020

Picture
The Liberian Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health keep changing dates for which the 2019-20 school year can be concluded.  12th-graders have finished their exams and are awaiting results before we can schedule graduation exercises.  Ninth graders and sixth graders have recently finished their testing.  So it looks like the year will be finishing before the end of October.

The 2020-21 academic year will start in early November with a full schedule of classes for all grades, implementing the rules and protocols that are required.  We are starting to enroll the students and parents are coming to pay tuition and fees for students.  We won’t be having remote classes because most families don’t have the computer access needed.

Oceanview Guesthouse

Many buildings have a history, but few buildings have a personality.  The ELWA Missionary Guesthouse has both.  It wasn't a consulate, but international dignitaries often visited.  It wasn't a school, but life lessons were taught and learned there every day. It wasn't a church, but Jesus dwelled there.
Originally constructed by ELWA's founding missionaries in the 1950's, the Guesthouse was the gathering place for an entire generation of children, who still lovingly refer to themselves as "ELWA Kids" though many are now in their 40's, 50's and 60's.  And its door was always open.
Foreign leaders from around the world were welcomed and entertained. Local people walked in any time of the day or night to get a drink, or something to eat, or a kind word in the name of Jesus. Over the years, the ELWA Guesthouse also served as a barber shop, a movie theater, a roller-skating rink, a funeral parlor, and a dining hall.  It hosted barbecues, babysitting classes, piano recitals, wedding showers, skit nights, Saturday baking parties, and farewell gatherings for departing missionary families after decades of service. It was home to all and a haven for those in need.
