What We’'re Doing

Peace

12/1/2024

Romans 15:13-Now the God of hope fill you with  all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

This scripture is not a traditional Christmas verse, but it embodies all the attributes of Christmas. A time of Hope, that Christ’s return would be soon, the Joy of celebrating the birth of Christ, the peace that we have in Christ, and the Hope that Peace will reign on the earth. But most of all, it reminds us that all of this is possible because of our belief in Christ. A baby born for the purpose of dying for our sins so that one day we can spend eternity with Him.

Merry Christmas everyone. May His Peace, which passes all understanding, be with you all this Christmas and in the year to come.

Christmas is a time we give gifts as a reminder and celebration of how Christ gave his life so that we may live in eternity with him. As we move into the new year EMA has chosen to focus on the following three areas of Ministry in 2025.

Education – Scholarships and teaching others have always been a part of what EMA does.  Education has been one of the core ministries of EMA.  Teach others how to operate and fix all aspects of the ministry: fixing radio equipment, fixing hospital equipment, providing clean water and electricity for the campus.  None of this could happen without a basic education starting in elementary school and continuing through high school.  Education also includes Christ-centered radio programs, which reach up-country. EMA annually supports the Education ministry at the level of $123,000.  The largest portion of these funds go to scholarships at ELWA Academy.

Healthcare – Liberia is the 9th poorest country in the world, and it is only about the size of the state of Tennessee in the US. There are only 2 hospitals in the country.  People travel miles to ELWA Hospital to receive care.  Often these individuals do not have the money to pay for the care they receive. The hospital benevolence program helps cover the cost for those who cannot pay.  EMA also helps fund the malnutrition program for infants in distress and the medical outreaches which go into the remote areas in Liberia.EMA allocates $47,000 a year to the malnutrition, benevolence and medical outreach programs.

Infrastructure – The houses and many of the buildings on campus are in need of repair. EMA is hoping to replace the building that houses the generators.  The current building was constructed in the 1960s. Since then, the size of the hospital has more than doubled. ELWA added a dental clinic and the school expanded to include a high school. These improvements have increased the demand for power; therefore, generators have been added. The current building is too small, and it needs updating.   ELWA has recently created a housing standard for every house on the compound.  This list includes functioning windows with screens, functioning front and back doors, at least one light and one functioning outlet, as well as, hot and cold running water. These are basic needs, but many houses do not have even these items. The generator will cost $94,000.00. EMA is anticipating that the housing repairs will be around $68,000.00.

As you prayerfully consider donating to these projects, just know that we appreciate each of you, and your love for Liberia.

School is open in Liberia....

10/1/2024

The students are showing up and rainy season is almost over. Just like when school starts in America, the students in Liberia are excited to start their new school year too; time to meet a new teacher and make new friends. Unlike American students, however, only those students who can pay for school get the opportunity to go to school. There is no such thing as free public school.  That is why in 2009 EMAUSA started school scholarships, and have always made them a priority. During the EBOLA crisis many children lost both parents, so EMA made the decision to increase their support for the scholarship program.

In Liberia more than 20% of children do not have access to a school; the literacy rate is less than 50%. Only 28% of women are able to read. You can see why the EMAUSA scholarship program is so important. Getting a job or starting a business without a basic education is almost impossible.
Here you see photos of Mardia Ricks.
Mardia's grandparents helped start ELWA radio back in the 1950’s. Her grandfather David Ricks, worked for ELWA radio services, and her grandmother Mary cared for and watched over many MK’s while their moms were at work at the radio station. Mardia, along with Jestina Wesseh, who was featured in a previous newsletter, graduated from nursing school and completed the exams to receive their nursing license, thanks to the EMA scholarship program.

JESTINA GRADUATES!Jestina Wesseh, whom EMAUSA has supported in recent years, graduated from the College of Health Sciences at Monrovia Bible College in 2022. Jestina is now working at a health clinic in Monrovia.

Without you, our faithful givers, this would not have been possible.  You may read this statement in every newsletter, but it is absolutely true, and said, each time, with a heart of gratitude.

Thankful For You

11/1/2023

As temperatures dip and calendars fill, we begin a season of reflection and gratitude. At EMAUSA, we say thank you. We're grateful for your steadfast kindness every day of 2023.

When we think of your partnership & generosity, three projects come to mind.

Rejoice with us!

ELWA Radio

With nearly 70 years of experience in Christian media in Liberia, SIM's ministry through ELWA Radio shares the love of Jesus throughout Liberia.

Through drama, word, and music, the gospel message is broadcast loud for all to hear. The radio station ministers to thousands of hearts by providing encouragement, hope, and restoration.
ELWA Hospital and Trinity Dental Clinic (TDC)

Founded by SIM in 1965, ELWA Hospital serves the medical needs of the community surrounding the ELWA Radio compound.

Years later, in 2008, ELWA Hospital added the Trinity Dental Clinic (TDC). Oral health is a critical healthcare service. However, there are few providers in Liberia. Because of your generosity, many lives are saved through ELWA Hospital and TDC.

P.S. Did you know the hospital also operated throughout the civil war period and the Ebola epidemic of 2014-2016?
ELWA Academy and Students In Business

ELWA Academy trains the mind and character of children in preparation for life and leadership in the church and society. We provide a Christ-centered educational experience through the curriculum and teachers' interactions with their students. Because of you, ELWA Academy offers affordable, quality education for families involved in full-time Christian ministry.
Thank you for making a difference through not just our radio, healthcare, and education ministries, but through many other projects as well. As you enter into this season of gratitude, we hope you find moments to pause and reflect. Happy holiday season from our EMAUSA family to yours!

An ELWA Academy Scholarships Story

9/1/2023

It's about that time of year. Back to school we go!

Meet Melvin Johnson (pictured here with EMA Board Member Steve Ackley). Melvin just had his last "first day of school" and has one more year left of college! He plans to graduate with a Bachelors in Economics from Stella Mara University next August. His passion is business administration, and he hopes to continue his education by pursuing an MBA in the U.K. or U.S.

Before attending college, Melvin received a Christ-centered education at ELWA Academy and benefited from our scholarship program. ELWA Academy provides quality education for families involved in full-time Christian ministry and kids in the community around ELWA.

We are thrilled about the future ahead of Melvin. He recently completed an internship with Change Agent Network (CAN) in 2020-2021, focusing on accounting transactions, bank deposits, and other tasks. His coworkers and supervisor speak very highly of his service.

Melvin lives and breathes Liberia. His ultimate goal with his education is to give back to his country. Melvin represents one of many kids at ELWA Academy and college students who would benefit from our scholarship program.

🏀Exciting update on the Basketball Court Project:

All funds have been raised for the construction of the court and operation of the Youth Discipleship Ministry in 2024! Thank you for your generous support!

The team led by Chad Winsor will be in Liberia from October 6-20 to complete the project, please pray for safe travel and a successful project.

Please pray that East International (the road construction company) will help us with compacting the field after the tractor work is finished.

Microscopes in the ELWA Academy Science Lab

Several years ago ELWA Academy built a new science lab for its high school. The gleaming white tabletops were a great start for this lab, but equipment such as microscopes were needed to improve the instruction.  EMAUSA purchased six new microscopes, and they are now in use in the science lab. These microscopes will help the students to prepare for the rigorous West African high school examination and become successful in the field of medicine.
