ELWA Radio 70th Anniversary Celebration

2/1/2024

In her book, “Voice Under Every Palm”, Jane Reed recounts the incredible story of how ELWA (Eternal Love Winning Africa) Radio came to be. The story begins with 3 recently graduated Wheaton College students who stepped out in faith.  Through much prayer, the three men were convinced that God was leading them to establish the first Christian radio station in Africa. So, they set up a meeting with then Wheaton College President, Dr. Edman, to get his advice. Dr. Edman assessed the seriousness and commitment of the men and asked them a series of questions: “Do you have an organization formed? Do you have any financial resources? Do you have a mailing list of potential donors?” Do you have any contacts in Africa? The boys looked down and answered,” no”.

The young men now fully understood the magnitude of this dream. Dr. Edman gave them some great advice and prayed with the young men. Before that meeting, the men just saw the brightness of the dream. Now that the task was clearer, their dedication deepened, and God became somehow greater as they realized that only God could accomplish this.

After many miraculous twists and turns, God accomplished the mission He placed in the hearts of these young men as well as the many missionaries that joined them shortly thereafter. On January 18th, 1954, in Liberia, West Africa, the first broadcast of the Gospel was shared over the airways. These broadcasts would eventually reach many African countries and places as far away as South America through short wave. At its peak, there were 70 missionaries and a community of 250 people that lived and worked on the ELWA Campus.

Now, 70 years after the first broadcast in Liberia, it’s time to celebrate all that God has done.

On February 17th-19th, ELWA and SIM will host a weekend celebration to commemorate the 70th anniversary of ELWA Radio! Many former missionaries and their now adult kids who grew up at ELWA are returning for the celebration. Activities for the celebration include a parade, soccer game, a church service celebration, an outdoor Christian concert, and a celebration banquet on the last evening.
Through your donations, ELWA Ministries Association USA sponsors 4 weekly programs on ELWA radio. We are also raising funds to help with the completion of the interior of the new radio building.  We finally believe 2024 will be the year that the new building will be operational. If you have been touched by Christian radio, please donate to ELWA Ministries so that the broadcasts continue for another 70 years.
As we look forward to many more years of sharing the gospel through radio, please enjoy this video.
